What Ashoka Problem Solving looks like

The quantitative and logical side of the assessment's 40 questions, which Ashoka developed with Cambridge on the model of its Thinking Skills Assessment, taken without a calculator and with no negative marking. The questions test reasoning with numbers and shapes rather than school formulae: ratios and rates, integer puzzles, figures pulled out of a scenario, and paper folding or patterns.

  • Ratios, rates and percentages
  • Integer puzzles
  • Working from a scenario
  • Paper folding and patterns

Ferry fares between two islands

  1. A ferry sells three kinds of ticket for the same crossing.
  2. Adult single: ₹90. Child single: ₹50.
  3. Group ticket: ₹400, covering up to six people travelling together, adults or children.
  1. What is the least that 4 adults and 5 children can pay to cross together?

    • A ₹550
    • B ₹590
    • C ₹610
    • D ₹800
    Show the answer

₹550. Put the group ticket on the six dearest fares - all 4 adults and 2 children - and buy singles for the other 3 children: 400 + 3 × 50 = ₹550. Singles for all nine cost ₹610.

  2. For which of these parties is a group ticket no help at all?

    • A 5 adults
    • B 3 adults and 3 children
    • C 2 adults and 6 children
    • D 4 adults and 2 children
    Show the answer

2 adults and 6 children. Six people with k adults cost 300 + 40k on singles, which tops ₹400 only when k is 3 or more. A party with 2 adults never has such a six: singles cost ₹480, and the cheapest plan with a group ticket costs ₹500.

  3. On Monday the ferry sold only single tickets and took exactly ₹1,000. What is the fewest passengers it could have carried?

    • A 11
    • B 12
    • C 14
    • D 20
    Show the answer

    12. 90a + 50c = 1,000 simplifies to 9a + 5c = 100, so the number of adults is a multiple of 5: 0, 5 or 10. Ten adults and 2 children make 12, the fewest. ₹1,000 ÷ ₹90 suggests 11, but 11 adult fares are ₹990 and no ticket costs ₹10.
