Try two questions from FEAT Paper 1

  1. Reasoning

Statement I: Dev is second from the left, and Isha is somewhere to the right of Dev. Statement II: Isha is third from the left, and Dev is somewhere to the left of Isha.

    • A Statement I alone is sufficient

    • D Even both statements together are not sufficient
  2. Quantitative

    • A 8:1
    • B 9:2

What FEAT Reasoning looks like

Twenty questions at 2 marks each, more per question than any other FEAT section, with no negative marking and no calculator. FLAME's own sample paper splits it into analytical sets - people or places arranged by rules such as seating or scheduling - and short arguments where you judge an assumption, a conclusion or an explanation.

  • Ordering puzzles
  • Assumptions and conclusions
  • Strengthen, weaken and explain

Five shows on a college radio station

  1. Tanvi, Uday, Vikram, Wasim and Yamini each host one show on a college radio station, one show a day from Monday to Friday.
  2. The five shows are on film, music, sport, books and news, one subject each.
  3. The sport show is on Friday.
  4. Uday hosts the books show, two days before Wasim's show.
  5. Vikram's show is the day after the music show.
  6. Yamini's show is later in the week than Vikram's.
  7. The news show is earlier in the week than the film show.
  8. Tanvi does not host the music show.
  1. Who hosts the music show?

    • A Tanvi
    • B Vikram
    • C Wasim
    • D Yamini
    Show the answer

Wasim. Vikram has the music show before him and Yamini's after him, so he is on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Of Uday's three possible days only Monday works, with Wasim on Wednesday: Vikram then takes Thursday, so Wednesday's show - Wasim's - is music.

  2. Which show is on Tuesday?

    • A News
    • B Film
    • C Music
    • D Sport
    Show the answer

News. Books (Monday), music (Wednesday) and sport (Friday) are fixed, so news and film take Tuesday and Thursday. News comes first, so Tuesday is news.

  3. Which of these is correctly matched?

    • A Tanvi - film
    • B Yamini - sport
    • C Vikram - news
    • D Wasim - sport
    Show the answer

Yamini - sport. The week runs Uday, Tanvi, Wasim, Vikram, Yamini, so Yamini has Friday's sport show. Wasim - sport is the trap: it needs Uday on Wednesday, which leaves Tanvi with the music show.

Every answer, in six steps

  1. 01

    Intuition

What the question is really asking, before any algebra.

  2. 02

    The trap

The wrong answer this question was written to sell you.

  3. 03

    Fast method

The shortcut a topper would actually use under time pressure.

  4. 04

    Clean solution

The full working, so the shortcut is not a magic trick.

  5. 05

    What's tested

The concept underneath, named - so you recognise it next time.

  6. 06

    Takeaway

    The one line worth remembering.
