Cities are often several degrees warmer than the countryside around them, a pattern known as the urban heat island. Concrete and asphalt soak up sunlight during the day and release it slowly at night, while the shortage of trees removes the cooling effect of shade and evaporation. The consequences are more than uncomfortable: hotter nights mean higher electricity bills for cooling and a greater risk of heat illness for the elderly. Yet the remedies are surprisingly ordinary. Painting roofs white, planting trees along streets and protecting the small lakes and parks that cities already have can lower local temperatures noticeably. The problem was built street by street, and it can be undone the same way.

In the late 1990s, fishermen along the coast of Kerala usually sold their catch at whichever beach market was nearest. When mobile phone coverage reached the coast, fishermen began calling several markets while still at sea and steering their boats to the one where buyers were waiting. Within a few years, prices across neighbouring markets became far more similar, and much less fish was thrown away unsold.
