Rules

At a glance 10 rules

  1. 1Grid, then direct cluesOne row per person, one column per attribute. Enter each direct 'X has Y' clue, then cross Y off for everyone else and X's other options.
  2. 2Last option standingNegative clues only cross out. When a person has one value left, or a value has one person left, it is theirs: three crosses in a row of four fill the fourth.
  3. 3Link attributes firstA clue like 'the Kochi student learns Japanese' joins two attributes, not a name: pair the attributes up first and put a person on the pair later.
  4. 4Numbers as values'A paid ₹10 more than B' or 'A and B together paid ₹70' allows only a few pairs: list them, and keep the pair that fits every other clue.
  5. 5Either/or and 'could be'Run both cases of an either/or clue side by side and drop the one that breaks a clue. 'Could be true' needs one valid case; 'must be true' needs all of them.
  6. 6Two items eachWhen each person takes two items, count free slots: a pair that must stay together (laundry with ironing) can only go to someone with two slots open.
  7. 7Teams and groupsSame-team clues glue people into blocks and different-team clues split them. Place the biggest block first and let the team sizes fill the rest.
  8. 8Selection rules'If P is in, Q is in' also means 'Q out, so P out', never 'Q in, so P in'. To test whether someone must be in, try to build a valid group without them.
  9. 9Shares with a totalWith a fixed total and order clues (A more than B, B more than C), list every split that fits; a share that is the same in all of them is fixed.
  10. 10Biggest and smallest shareDifferent whole numbers, fixed total: to push one share up, give every other share the least it can take, even those above it. To keep the top share small, keep all of them close.

Tap an option to answer. The first tap counts.

  1. Q1Easy

Riya, Sameer and Tanvi won the gold, silver and bronze medals in a fest quiz, one medal each.

Riya did not win the gold.

Tanvi won neither the gold nor the silver.

    Who won the gold?

    Correct answerSameer

    Why

Negative clues only cross out, and the last option standing is the answer.

Tanvi loses gold and silver, so she has the bronze, and Riya, barred from gold, takes the silver.

    So Sameer won the gold.

  2. Q2Easy

Eight trainees, Farah, Gopal, Hina, Ishan, Jatin, Kavya, Lohit and Mira, are split into two teams of four, Red and Blue. Jatin is in Red. Kavya and Lohit are both in a different team from Jatin. Hina and Ishan are in the same team, and so are Lohit and Mira. Gopal and Hina are in different teams. Which three trainees are in Red along with Jatin?

    Correct answerFarah, Hina and Ishan

    Why

Build the blocks first, then let the team size of four do the rest.

Kavya, Lohit and Mira (who goes with Lohit) all sit in Blue, leaving one Blue place, so the Hina-Ishan pair must go to Red.

Gopal cannot join Hina, so he takes that last Blue place and Farah goes to Red.

So Jatin's teammates in Red are Farah, Hina and Ishan.
