Rules

At a glance 8 rules

  1. 1Draw the frame firstFloors go in a column with the top floor on top, days in a row from Monday, boxes in a pile. Number the places so every clue turns into simple arithmetic.
  2. 2Fixed places, then blocksEnter clues that name a place first. Then glue 'T immediately before V' into one block and slide it only through two free neighbouring places.
  3. 3Only k before'Only k people before U' puts U in place k + 1. If one day or flat is empty, count people or exams, not days: the place can shift by one.
  4. 4Fewest options firstWith a second detail (team, subject), give each place a name cell and a detail cell, cross out every 'not', and start with whoever has the fewest places left.
  5. 5Links through a place'Neel lives just above the Pune fan' ties a name to a detail through a place: Neel can't take the bottom floor, or one whose floor below is fixed to another team.
  6. 6Use the endsAnyone who must be above or after someone can't take the bottom or first place; anyone who must be below or before someone can't take the top or last.
  7. 7Must, could, cannotDraw every case a clue allows and run each later clue on all of them. 'Must' holds in every survivor, 'could' in at least one, 'cannot' in none.
  8. 8Truth and liesTwo statements that contradict each other hold exactly one truth between them. Otherwise assume one speaker is truthful and keep the case with no contradiction.

  1. Q1Easy

Four college clubs, Debate, Music, Photography and Quiz, each get the seminar hall on a different day from Monday to Thursday.

    Quiz gets it on Wednesday.

Music gets it on the day right after Debate.

Which club gets the hall on Thursday?

    Correct answerPhotography

    Why

Glue 'right after' into one block and look for two free days in a row.

With Wednesday taken, only Monday-Tuesday can hold Debate then Music.

So Photography gets the hall on Thursday.

  2. Q2Easy

A five-storey building has floors numbered 1 (lowest) to 5 (top). Five friends, J, K, L, M and N, live on different floors.

    - K lives on an odd-numbered floor, but not on floor 1.

    - L lives on the floor immediately above M.

    - N lives on a higher floor than J.

    - J does not live on floor 1.

    Who lives on floor 1?

    Correct answerM

    Why

Look at the bottom floor first: nobody who has to live above someone can be there.

K is on floor 3 or 5 and J is kept off floor 1; L sits right above M and N above J, so neither L nor N can be lowest.

That leaves M as the one on floor 1.
