How to prepare for IPMAT 2027

Prepare for IPMAT Indore in three phases: learn the quant syllabus topic by topic while reading every day for verbal; then practise each section against its own 40-minute clock; then sit full-length mocks and study every mistake. IPMAT can be prepared for at home, without classroom coaching. What coaching adds is a structure, a test series in the real pattern and someone to ask, and Klay Prep puts all three online: 96 topic lessons, 15 papers of IPMAT previous year questions, a full-length IPMAT mock that runs like the real test, and a step-by-step solution to any question you ask.

Checked against IIM Indore - Admission Procedure, IPM 2026-31 and Career Launcher - IPMAT Indore cut-off 2026.

What IPMAT rewards

Three clocks, not one
90 questions in 120 minutes, in three sections of 40 minutes each, taken in a fixed order: two quant sections, 30 multiple-choice questions and 15 short answers, then 45 verbal questions. Time left in one section does not carry into the next, so each section is its own race.
The pace
About 1 minute 20 seconds a question in the quant MCQs, 2 minutes 40 seconds in the short answers and 53 seconds in verbal. Verbal is the fastest section on the paper, reading passages included.
The marking
+4 for a right answer. A wrong MCQ costs 1; a wrong short answer costs nothing, so every short-answer question is worth attempting. In the MCQs a pure guess among four options is worth +0.25 on average, and +1.5 once two options are ruled out.
A cut-off in every section
IIM Indore interviews only candidates who clear a minimum in each section, so a strong quant score cannot carry a weak verbal one. Career Launcher reported the 2026 General-category cut-offs as 27 out of 120 in the quant MCQs, 28 out of 60 in the short answers and 111 out of 180 in verbal: verbal needs the most accuracy, and quant needs fewer, surer answers rather than more attempts.

A 16-week plan

At two to three hours a day. With longer than 16 weeks, give the extra time to the first phase; with less, shorten the first phase and keep the mocks.

  1. Weeks 1 to 6

    Foundations

Quant, one topic at a time: arithmetic first (percentages, ratio, profit and loss, interest, speed and distance), then number system, then algebra (linear equations, inequalities and modulus, logarithms, progressions), then geometry and coordinate geometry, permutations, combinations and probability, set theory, and matrices and determinants. Learn the idea, solve 20 to 30 questions untimed, and write down every mistake and why it happened.

Verbal, every day: read one long article and answer one reading-comprehension passage; learn a few grammar rules at a time (tenses, conditionals, parallelism); practise para-jumbles twice a week.

Each quant and verbal topic is a lesson on Klay Prep, with a video and ten questions to test yourself: 96 in all. The IPMAT syllabus, topic by topic →

  2. Weeks 7 to 11

    Each section against its clock

Timed practice in the paper's own pace: 30 quant MCQs in 40 minutes, 15 short answers in 40, 45 verbal questions in 40. Learn when to leave a question: one that has taken twice the section's pace is costing you two others.

Previous year questions show the paper's style better than any textbook. Solve one paper a day, timed, and go back to the topic lesson for every question you got wrong.

Klay Prep has 15 papers of IPMAT previous year questions, 20 questions each. Every question and answer key is free, and paper 1 is free in full with worked solutions. IPMAT previous year questions →

  3. Weeks 12 to 16

    Full mocks

One full 120-minute paper a week, at the time of day the real test runs, with the sections locked in order. Then spend as long reviewing it as you spent sitting it: every wrong answer, and every right one that took too long.

Between mocks, go back only to the topics the mock found. In the last week, learn nothing new: one mock, light revision, sleep.

IPMAT Indore Mock 1 runs like the real test: 90 questions in 3 locked sections of 40 minutes, IPMAT's marking, and a scored result with every solution when it ends. The first attempt is free. Take IPMAT Indore Mock 1 →

Common questions

Can I prepare for IPMAT at home without coaching?
Yes. IPMAT Indore tests school mathematics and English reading, and both can be learnt from lessons and practice. What classroom coaching adds is a structure, a test series in the real pattern and someone to clear doubts. A student preparing at home needs those three from somewhere, and Klay Prep puts them online: 96 topic lessons, 15 papers of previous year questions, a full-length mock on IPMAT's own clock, and a step-by-step solution to any question you ask.
How many months do I need to prepare for IPMAT?
The plan on this page takes 16 weeks, about four months, at two to three hours a day. Starting earlier mostly buys time for the foundations, which is where a student who has not done much maths since Class 10 needs it. Starting later means shortening the foundations, not the mocks.
What should an online IPMAT course or test series include?
Four things: lessons that cover the whole syllabus topic by topic; previous year questions, to learn the paper's style; full-length mocks that copy the real test's three locked 40-minute sections and its marking; and worked solutions that show why an answer is right, not just which one. Klay Prep has all four for IPMAT Indore: 96 lessons, 15 papers, a full-length mock, and solutions that give the intuition, the trap, the fast way and the clean way.
Is there a free IPMAT mock test?
Yes. Klay Prep's IPMAT Indore Mock 1 is free to take once on a free account: 90 questions in 3 locked sections of 40 minutes each, with IPMAT's marking, and a scored result with every solution when it ends.
How do I prepare for IPMAT verbal?
Read every day and practise against the clock. The verbal section is 45 questions in 40 minutes, about 53 seconds each with the reading passages included, and its reported 2026 General-category cut-off of 111 out of 180 was the highest of the three sections, so verbal accuracy decides who is interviewed. Practise reading comprehension, para-jumbles, sentence completion and correction, and grammar.
Should I guess in IPMAT?
In the short-answer section, always: a wrong answer there costs nothing. In the MCQs a right answer is +4 and a wrong one -1, so a guess among all four options is worth +0.25 on average and +1.5 once two are ruled out. Rule options out before guessing, and remember each section has its own cut-off.
