At a glance 9 formulas
- 1Median of n values
- 2ModeThe mode is the value that occurs most often. A set can have two modes, or none when every value occurs equally often.
- 3Median ignores the endsRaising the largest values or lowering the smallest leaves the median where it is; the mean moves with every change.
- 4Frequency table medianKeep a running total. Odd : the median is the th value. Even : average the th and th values, even if they differ.
- 5Grouped data medianMedian : are the median class's start, frequency and width, the total before it, the total.
- 6Empirical relation
- 7Which is largestA tail of large values pulls the mean up: mean > median > mode. A tail of small values reverses the order; symmetric data has all three equal.
- 8Median with an unknownWith an unknown in the data, the median depends on where sorts: take the cases below, between and above the middle values.
- 9A single modeA unique mode must occur more often than every other value: if occurs twice, every other value occurs at most once.

- Q1Easy
Daily maximum temperatures over a week were 31, 27, 34, 29, 36, 30 and 33 °C. What is the median temperature, in °C?
Correct answer31
Why
Sort first, then take the middle value.
In order: ; with 7 values the median is the 4th.
So the median is 31 °C (29, the 4th value as written, is the trap).
- Q2Easy
The data set for the number of mock tests attempted by 7 students is: 14, 22, , 18, 22, 26, 16. If the mean of the data set is 20, what is the sum of its median and mode?
Correct answer44
Why
The mean fixes the total: , and the six known values make , so .
Sorted, the list is : the middle entry is 22, and 22 also occurs most often.
Median plus mode is .
