- 1Build the four firstLink the sentences by pronouns, connectors and examples into the strongest paragraph. The line that fits nowhere in it is the answer.
- 2Pointed-to lines stayIf another sentence points back to a line ('This result', 'the whey', 'Both effects'), that line belongs, however odd it looks.
- 3Style alone never decidesA question, an example from another setting or a line full of detail can still belong. The odd one breaks the topic or the logic.
- 4Same word, different pointA line can repeat the topic's key word and still be odd. Ask what it says, not which words it shares.
- 5Watch the scopeA sweeping claim about everyone, among lines about one case, breaks the paragraph's scope; so does a stray side fact.
- 6Contradiction is outA line that cuts against the paragraph's direction is odd, even when it uses all the same words.
- 7Orphan pointers'Such apps' or 'this method' with nothing in the set to point to cannot be placed, so it is the prime suspect.
- 8Connectors must connectA 'by contrast' or 'also' with nothing to contrast or add to is a fake link, not proof that the line belongs.

- Q1Easy
Four of the five sentences below form a coherent paragraph. Which sentence does not belong?
1. Our college has started a cycle-sharing scheme for students who live in the hostels.
2. Each cycle can be unlocked with a college ID card at any of six stands on campus.
3. The college cricket team has won the inter-college trophy for the third year running.
4. Rides under thirty minutes are free, so most students now cycle to their morning classes.
5. Since the scheme began, far fewer autos wait for passengers at the main gate.
Correct answerSentence 3
Why
Build the four first: the scheme (1), unlocking a cycle (2), free short rides (4) and fewer autos at the gate (5) run as one story.
The trophy line shares only the word 'college' and says nothing about cycles.
So the odd one out is Sentence 3.
- Q2Easy
Four of the five sentences below form a coherent paragraph. Which sentence does not belong?
1. Many hostel students skip breakfast to get a few more minutes of sleep.
2. Yet an empty stomach makes it hard to stay focused through a long morning of lectures.
3. Idli, poha and paratha are breakfast favourites in different parts of the country.
4. So our mess now runs a grab-and-go counter with fruit, eggs and sandwiches until 9:30 am.
5. Students can pick up a plate on their way to class without giving up those extra minutes in bed.
Correct answerSentence 3
Why
Same word, different point: every line is about breakfast, so ask what each one says.
Four lines make one case: skipping breakfast, the cost to focus, the grab-and-go counter, and the sleep it saves; a list of regional favourites plays no part in it.
So the odd one out is Sentence 3.
