At a glance 10 rules
- 1Find the openerThe opener names its subject in full and makes sense alone. A sentence that starts with a pronoun (it, this, such) or a connector (but, however, so) almost never opens.
- 2Spot the closerThe closer draws the result or the lesson ('so', 'that is why', 'as a result', 'finally') and opens no new topic.
- 3Pointers sit next door'It', 'this', 'these', 'such' and 'the same' sit right after the sentence that names what they point to; match singular and plural. That makes a mandatory pair.
- 4Pointers hide mid-sentenceRead the whole sentence, not just its first word. 'A survey put a number on it' looks like an opener, but 'it' points back to something said before.
- 5'A' before 'the''A wallet' introduces, 'the wallet' refers back. The full name also comes before its short form: 'fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG)' before 'FMCG firms'.
- 6Contrast follows its claim'However', 'yet' and 'by contrast' need the view they push against right before them. 'The former' comes before 'the latter'.
- 7Claim before example'For example' and 'for instance' follow the general point they prove, so an example sentence never opens.
- 8Time orderDated events run in order, but 'later', 'finally' and 'ten years earlier' count from the sentence just before them, so they sit next to it.
- 9Lock one pairFind one mandatory pair and test only the options that keep it. Then read the survivor once, start to end.
- 10Typing the orderWith no options to scan, fix the opener, chain the pairs, then slot the leftover where its link fits. Write the order down as you go.

- Q1Easy
Arrange the sentences below in the most logical order.
1. This cut the canteen's waste bill by almost half within a term.
2. Our college canteen used to serve every meal on disposable paper plates.
3. Last year, it replaced them with steel plates that students drop off at a counter after eating.
4. The money saved now pays for two extra water coolers on campus.
Correct answer2-3-1-4
Why
Find the opener: only sentence 2 names the canteen and needs nothing before it.
Only one order starts with 2, and its chain holds: 'it replaced them' (3), 'This cut the bill' (1), then 'The money saved' (4).
So the order is 2-3-1-4.
- Q2Easy
Arrange the sentences below in the most logical order.
P. The wallet held ₹3,000 and a library card, but nothing with a phone number on it.
Q. On Monday, a first-year student found a wallet under a bench near the college gate.
R. Using the card's number, the librarian traced the owner within an hour.
S. So she handed it in at the library instead of the security desk.
Correct answerQ-P-S-R
Why
'A wallet' introduces it and 'the wallet' refers back, so Q opens and P comes next.
'So she handed it in at the library' needs the library card in P, and the librarian can trace the owner only after the wallet reaches the library.
So the order is Q-P-S-R.
