At a glance 8 rules
- 1Inside, overlapping or apartTwo classes are inside (every X is a Y), overlapping (some X are Y, and each has members outside the other) or separate (no X is a Y).
- 2Overlap: name three membersTo show an overlap, name one member in both, one only in X and one only in Y: a woman teacher, a man teacher and a woman who does not teach make Teachers and Women overlap.
- 3Settle each pairWith three classes, settle each of the three pairs on its own (inside, overlap or separate). The right picture gets all three pairs right.
- 4Pictures to knowA chain (Roses, Flowers, Plants); two apart inside a third (Gold, Silver, Metals); two overlapping inside a third; one inside another with a third crossing both.
- 5Statements into one picture'All X are Y': X inside Y. 'No X is Y': apart. 'Some X are Y': they share a region. 'Some X are not Y': part of X lies outside Y. Draw every statement on one picture.
- 6Multiples meet at the LCMMultiples of and of overlap in exactly the multiples of their LCM, not of : multiples of 6 and 8 meet in the multiples of 24, not of 48.
- 7In A but not B'In A but not B' is A's only region plus its pair region with C. The A and B region and the centre belong to B, so leave them out.
- 8Inside empties regionsWhen X sits inside Y, every region with X outside Y is empty: fill only the regions the picture allows, then count.

- Q1Easy
Which of these best describes how Sparrows, Birds and Animals are related?
Correct answerA chain: Sparrows inside Birds, and Birds inside Animals
Why
Settle each pair: every sparrow is a bird, and every bird is an animal.
So Sparrows sits inside Birds and Birds inside Animals, with no circle sticking out of the next.
The picture is the chain: Sparrows inside Birds, inside Animals.
- Q2Easy
Which pair of classes is best shown by two overlapping circles?
Correct answerStudents, Cricketers
Why
An overlap needs members in both, in only the first and in only the second.
A student who plays cricket, a student who doesn't and a professional cricketer give all three; every square is a rectangle, every pen is stationery, and no ocean is a desert.
So Students and Cricketers overlap.
