  1. 1Eight regionsThree circles cut a group into 8 regions: 3 'only one', 3 'exactly these two', the centre and 'none'. Everyone is in exactly one, so the 8 add to the total (100% in a survey).
  2. 2Read the words'A and B' includes the centre. 'A and B but not C' (or 'only A and B') is the pair region alone. 'Only A' is A with neither of the others.
  3. 3Only one, from its circleonly A=n(A)−(x+y+z)\text{only } A = n(A) - (x + y + z)x,y=A’s two pair-only parts, z=all threex, y = A\text{'s two pair-only parts},\ z = \text{all three}
  4. 4Outside a circlenot A=N−n(A)\text{not } A = N - n(A)N=group, U=union: only C=U−n(A∪B)N = \text{group},\ U = \text{union}:\ \text{only } C = U - n(A \cup B)
  5. 5Count the other sideat most two=N−all three\text{at most two} = N - \text{all three}at least one=N−none\text{at least one} = N - \text{none}
  6. 6Centre unknown: call it xCall the centre xx and write every region in xx: a pair figure of 15 leaves 15−x15 - x in its pair-only part. Then one total fixes xx.
  7. 7Ratio cluesTurn 'in the ratio 3 : 2 : 1' or 'twice as many' into 3k,2k,k3k, 2k, k, one letter per chain of clues, and let a total fix kk.
  8. 8Fraction of a circle'Half the cricket fans follow only cricket' takes the cricket circle as the base: only cricket then equals the other three parts of that circle put together.
  9. 9Yes/no traits: a gridYes/no traits (girl or boy, glasses or not) are sets too: keep the group the question asks about and draw a 2 by 2 grid with totals on its edges. Any three cells fix the fourth.

  1. Q1Easy

    In a hostel, 40 students play chess. Of these 40, 6 also play both carrom and badminton, 9 also play carrom but not badminton, and 11 also play badminton but not carrom. How many of them play only chess?

    Correct answer14

    Why

    Only chess is the chess circle minus its other three parts.

    Those parts hold 6+9+11=266 + 9 + 11 = 26 students, and 40−26=1440 - 26 = 14.

    So 14 students play only chess.

  2. Q2Easy

    The numbers below come from a Venn diagram of the students studying Math, English and Hindi. (NOTE: You have to take the given data to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts.)

    Math 29, English 25, Hindi 25

    Math and English 8, Math and Hindi 4, English and Hindi 5

    All three subjects 3

    (Each figure for two subjects includes the students who study all three.)

    How many students are studying Math as well as English but not Hindi?

    Correct answer5

    Why

    Take the centre out of the pair figure.

    The 8 counts every Math-and-English student, the 3 who also take Hindi included, so 8−38 - 3 drops them.

    So 5 students take Math and English without Hindi.
