Rules

At a glance 10 rules

  1. 1Read the scale firstNote the axis unit, the gridline step and where the axis starts; on an axis that does not start at zero, a bar twice as tall is not twice the value.
  2. 2Stacked barsThe top of a stacked bar is the total; a segment is its top edge minus its bottom edge, so never read a middle segment's top as its value.
  3. 3Unequal periodsWhen bars cover periods of different length (28, 29, 30 or 31 days; 4 or 5 weeks), divide each bar by its length before comparing.
  4. 4Bars of growth ratesWhen bars show growth over the year before, a shorter bar above zero still means a rise; the value falls only in a year whose bar is below zero.
  5. 5Readings are rangesA reading off a gridline is only near; for the largest possible growth take the new bar at its highest and the old bar at its lowest.
  6. 6Average from a baselinexˉ=b+∑(xi−b)n\bar{x} = b + \dfrac{\sum (x_i - b)}{n}xi=the n bars, b=a round levelx_i = \text{the } n \text{ bars},\ b = \text{a round level}
  7. 7Over the whole year∑achieved∑target×100\dfrac{\sum \text{achieved}}{\sum \text{target}} \times 100never average the percentages\text{never average the percentages}
  8. 8More than 120%'X is more than 120% of Y' means X−Y>Y5X - Y > \tfrac{Y}{5}, or 5X>6Y5X > 6Y; a tie is not 'more than'.
  9. 9Share across yearsA segment's share rises only if it grows faster, in %, than the whole bar, which is the same as its ratio to the rest of the bar rising.
  10. 10Share of a changecontribution=Δ segmentΔ total×100\text{contribution} = \dfrac{\Delta\,\text{segment}}{\Delta\,\text{total}} \times 100Δ=new−old; can top 100%\Delta = \text{new} - \text{old};\ \text{can top } 100\%

  1. Q1Easy

    A stacked bar graph shows a bookshop's monthly sales, in ₹ thousand. Fiction is the lower part of each bar and Non-fiction sits on top of it. Read off the axis:

    July: Fiction ends at 42, the whole bar ends at 70

    August: Fiction ends at 38, the whole bar ends at 75

    September: Fiction ends at 45, the whole bar ends at 72

    What were the Non-fiction sales in August?

    Correct answer₹37 thousand

    Why

    In a stacked bar a segment is its top edge minus its bottom edge.

    August's Non-fiction runs from 38 up to 75, so it is 75−38=3775 - 38 = 37.

    Non-fiction sales in August were ₹37 thousand.

  2. Q2Easy

    A bar chart compares a sales team's quarterly target with what it achieved, in ₹ lakh.

    Q1: target 40, achieved 36

    Q2: target 45, achieved 48

    Q3: target 50, achieved 47

    Q4: target 60, achieved 66

    For the whole year, what percentage of its total target did the team achieve, correct to one decimal place?

    Correct answer101.0%

    Why

    For the whole year, divide total achieved by total target; never average the four quarterly percentages.

    Quarter by quarter the team was 4 short, 3 over, 3 short and 6 over, so it beat the 195 lakh target by 2 lakh.

    197195≈1.010\frac{197}{195} \approx 1.010, so 101.0% of the year's target was met.
