At a glance 10 rules

  1. 1Share to countcount=share %100×total\text{count} = \dfrac{\text{share}\ \%}{100} \times \text{total}missing share=100%−the rest\text{missing share} = 100\% - \text{the rest}
  2. 2Share of a sharex% of y% of N=x×y×N10000x\% \text{ of } y\% \text{ of } N = \dfrac{x \times y \times N}{10000}
  3. 3Moving between headsWhen one head grows out of another (more rent paid from savings), the total stays put: add the change to one share and take it from the other.
  4. 4Share vs countWhen the total changes, compare counts, not shares: a count falls only if its new share is below old share × old total ÷ new total.
  5. 5Overall shareoverall %=p1n1+p2n2n1+n2\text{overall}\ \% = \dfrac{p_1 n_1 + p_2 n_2}{n_1 + n_2}p=share in the group, n=its sizep = \text{share in the group},\ n = \text{its size}
  6. 6Two-way tableEvery row and column adds up to its total; fill a line with one blank first. Then read the base: 'of the non-vegetarians' and 'of the second years' differ.
  7. 7Running-count tablesIn a 'below x' or an 'x and above' table, a band's count is the difference between the two rows at its edges.
  8. 8Unchanged group anchorsIf one group's count does not change, its new share fixes the new total: new total = that count ÷ its new share.
  9. 9Band edgesValues inside a band can sit anywhere in it. For the least possible count above a cut, push the band's members below the cut; for the most, push them above.
  10. 10Least overlapboth≥A+B−N\text{both} \ge A + B - NA,B=groups, N=all; most=min⁡(A,B)A, B = \text{groups},\ N = \text{all};\ \text{most} = \min(A, B)

  1. Q1Easy

    The table shows how a cricket academy's 1,200 trainees are split by role.

    Batters: 45%

    Bowlers: 30%

    All-rounders: ?

    How many trainees are all-rounders?

    Correct answer300

    Why

    The missing share is what is left of 100%: 100−45−30=25100 - 45 - 30 = 25%.

    25% is a quarter, and a quarter of 1,200 is 300.

    So 300 trainees are all-rounders.

  2. Q2Easy

    The table gives a running count of the marks of 60 students in a test out of 100.

    Below 20: 6

    Below 40: 18

    Below 60: 39

    Below 80: 52

    Up to 100: 60

    How many students scored 40 or more but below 60?

    Correct answer21

    Why

    In a running-count table, a band is the gap between the rows at its edges.

    '40 or more but below 60' is 'below 60' minus 'below 40', that is 39−1839 - 18.

    So 21 students scored in that band.
