  3. 3Units and zerosSettle the units before dividing: 1 lakh is 10510^5, 1 crore is 10710^7, 1 tonne is 1,000 kg, and 'in thousands' adds three zeros.
  4. 410% and 1% blocksFor a change, count 10% blocks of the old value in the difference, then 1% blocks: on a base of 640, a rise of 91 is 64+4×6.4+1.464 + 4 \times 6.4 + 1.4, about 14.2%.
  5. 5Round to two figuresRound each number to two significant figures (4,873 to 4,900) when the options are 5% or more apart; work exactly when two options are within 2%.
  6. 6Compare two fractionsab>cd  ⟺  ad>bc\dfrac{a}{b} > \dfrac{c}{d} \iff ad > bcrate k: ab>k  ⟺  a>kb\text{rate } k:\ \tfrac{a}{b} > k \iff a > kb
  7. 7Bridge close fractionsAdding the same number to top and bottom raises a fraction below 1. Adding cc to the top and dd to the bottom pulls ab\tfrac{a}{b} towards cd\tfrac{c}{d}.

  1. Q1Easy

A college canteen's monthly milk bill:

    July: ₹4,800

    August: ₹5,530

By roughly what percentage did the bill rise?

    Correct answerAbout 15%

    Why

Use 10% and 1% blocks of the old bill: 10% of ₹4,800 is 480 and 1% is 48.

    The rise is 5530−4800=7305530 - 4800 = 730, which is 480+5×48+10480 + 5 \times 48 + 10, a little over 15%; dividing by 5,530 instead gives the trap 13%.

So the bill rose by about 15%.

  2. Q2Easy

A district's mango exports last year:

    Value: ₹192 crore

    Quantity: 4,870 tonnes

Roughly what was the average export price per kg?

    Correct answerAbout ₹400

    Why

Settle the zeros first: ₹192 crore is 192×107192 \times 10^7 rupees and 4,870 tonnes is about 4.9×1064.9 \times 10^6 kg.

    192×1074.9×106=19204.9≈390\frac{192 \times 10^7}{4.9 \times 10^6} = \frac{1920}{4.9} \approx 390.

So the mangoes sold for about ₹400 per kg.
