  1. 1Split in a ratioshare of a=aa+b+c×total\text{share of } a = \dfrac{a}{a + b + c} \times \text{total}
  2. 2Chain ratiosAC=AB×BC\dfrac{A}{C} = \dfrac{A}{B} \times \dfrac{B}{C}A:B=2:3, B:C=4:5⇒A:B:C=8:12:15A:B = 2:3,\ B:C = 4:5 \Rightarrow A:B:C = 8:12:15
  3. 3One against the restA:rest=a:b⇒A=aa+b×totalA : \text{rest} = a : b \Rightarrow A = \dfrac{a}{a + b} \times \text{total}
  4. 4Fourth, third, meana:b=c:x⇒x=bcaa : b = c : x \Rightarrow x = \dfrac{bc}{a}third proportional=b2a, mean=ab\text{third proportional} = \dfrac{b^2}{a},\ \text{mean} = \sqrt{ab}
  5. 5Transfers keep the totalWhen money only moves from one person to another, the total is fixed: put the old and new ratios over the same total and read the change in parts.
  6. 6Income, spend, savingsWrite incomes as ax,bxax, bx and spends as cy,dycy, dy. Each saving is income minus spend, which gives two equations in xx and yy.
  7. 7Componendo-dividendoab=cd⇒a+ba−b=c+dc−d\dfrac{a}{b} = \dfrac{c}{d} \Rightarrow \dfrac{a + b}{a - b} = \dfrac{c + d}{c - d}
  8. 8Equal ratiosab=cd=a+cb+d\dfrac{a}{b} = \dfrac{c}{d} = \dfrac{a + c}{b + d}=pa+qcpb+qd= \dfrac{pa + qc}{pb + qd}
  9. 9Direct and inversey∝x⇒y2y1=x2x1y \propto x \Rightarrow \dfrac{y_2}{y_1} = \dfrac{x_2}{x_1}y∝1x⇒y2y1=x1x2y \propto \dfrac{1}{x} \Rightarrow \dfrac{y_2}{y_1} = \dfrac{x_1}{x_2}
  10. 10Joint variationy∝x2z⇒y2y1=(x2x1)2×z1z2y \propto \dfrac{x^{2}}{z} \Rightarrow \dfrac{y_2}{y_1} = \left(\dfrac{x_2}{x_1}\right)^{2} \times \dfrac{z_1}{z_2}multiply each factor’s ratio\text{multiply each factor's ratio}
  11. 11Fixed plus variableC=a+knC = a + knk=C2−C1n2−n1, a=C1−kn1k = \dfrac{C_2 - C_1}{n_2 - n_1},\ a = C_1 - kn_1

  1. Q1Easy

    The ₹9,000 prize at a college fest is shared by the top three teams in the ratio 5 : 3 : 1. How much does the second team get?

    Correct answer₹3,000

    Why

    Find one part first: 5+3+1=95 + 3 + 1 = 9 parts share ₹9,000, so one part is ₹1,000.

    The second team has 3 parts, which is ₹3,000.

  2. Q2Easy

    Asked in BBA DBE 2024

    A sum of ₹7,740 is divided between X, Y and Z such that the ratio of the share of X to the combined share of Y and Z is 4:114 : 11 and the ratio of the share of Z to the combined share of X and Y is 1:31 : 3. What is the share (in ₹) of Y?

    Correct answer3,741

    Why

    Turn each 'one against the other two' ratio into a share of the whole.

    X gets 44+11=415\frac{4}{4 + 11} = \frac{4}{15} of ₹7,740, which is 2064, and Z gets 11+3=14\frac{1}{1 + 3} = \frac{1}{4}, which is 1935.

    Y takes the rest: 7740−3999=37417740 - 3999 = 3741, and that is ₹3,741.
