  1. 1Train past a platformT=Ltrain+LplatformST = \dfrac{L_{\text{train}} + L_{\text{platform}}}{S}pole or standing man: T=LtrainS\text{pole or standing man: } T = \dfrac{L_{\text{train}}}{S}
  2. 2Two trains crossingT=L1+L2S1+S2 (opposite)T = \dfrac{L_1 + L_2}{S_1 + S_2}\ \text{(opposite)}same way: T=L1+L2S1−S2\text{same way: } T = \dfrac{L_1 + L_2}{S_1 - S_2}
  3. 3Passing a moving personA train passing a walker, a cyclist or a passenger in another train covers only its own length, at the relative speed: subtract if they move the same way, add if they meet.
  4. 4Beats by x metresSASB=LL−x\dfrac{S_A}{S_B} = \dfrac{L}{L - x}
  5. 5Margin in secondsA beats B by x m or t s⇒SB=xtA \text{ beats } B \text{ by } x \text{ m or } t \text{ s} \Rightarrow S_B = \dfrac{x}{t}winner’s time=LSB−t\text{winner's time} = \dfrac{L}{S_B} - t
  6. 6Chain the marginsIf A beats B by x m and B beats C by y m in an L m race, C has run (L−x)(L−y)L\frac{(L - x)(L - y)}{L} m when A finishes.
  7. 7Head startA start of h m that ends in a dead heat is the same as beating by h m: in the faster runner's time the other runs L−hL - h. A start of t seconds is t seconds of running alone.
  8. 8First meeting anywhereT=Ca+b (opposite)T = \dfrac{C}{a + b}\ \text{(opposite)}same way: T=Ca−b\text{same way: } T = \dfrac{C}{a - b}
  9. 9Together at the startT=LCM(Ca, Cb)T = \text{LCM}\left(\dfrac{C}{a},\ \dfrac{C}{b}\right)three runners: LCM of all three lap times\text{three runners: LCM of all three lap times}
  10. 10Distinct meeting pointsa:b=p:q in lowest termsa : b = p : q\ \text{in lowest terms}p+q points opposite, p−q the same wayp + q\ \text{points opposite},\ p - q\ \text{the same way}
  11. 11Counting meetingsOpposite ways, they meet once for every lap their distances add up to; the same way, once for every lap the faster one gains. Count whole laps only.

  1. Q1Easy

    A 280 m long goods train runs at 14 m/s. How long does it take to cross a 140 m long bridge completely?

    Correct answer30 seconds

    Why

    A train crossing a bridge covers its own length plus the bridge.

    280+140=420280 + 140 = 420 m at 14 m/s takes 420÷14=30420 \div 14 = 30 s.

    It crosses in 30 seconds.

  2. Q2Easy

    Arjun runs 100 m in 12.5 seconds and Dev runs 100 m in 15 seconds. If they race each other over 100 m, by how many metres does Arjun win?

    Correct answer162316\frac{2}{3} m

    Why

    Turn the time gap into metres with the loser's speed.

    Dev runs 10015=203\frac{100}{15} = \frac{20}{3} m/s and still needs 15−12.5=2.515 - 12.5 = 2.5 s when Arjun finishes.

    2.5×203=16232.5 \times \frac{20}{3} = 16\frac{2}{3}, so Arjun wins by 162316\frac{2}{3} m.
