  1. Q1Easy

    If sin⁡θ=1237\sin\theta = \frac{12}{37} and θ\theta is acute, what is tan⁡θ\tan\theta?

    Correct answer1235\frac{12}{35}

    Why

    Draw the right triangle: opposite 12 and hypotenuse 37 leave an adjacent side of 372−122=35\sqrt{37^2 - 12^2} = 35.

    tan⁡θ\tan\theta is opposite over adjacent; turning it upside down gives the trap 3512\frac{35}{12}.

    So tan⁡θ=1235\tan\theta = \frac{12}{35}.

  2. Q2Easy

    Asked in IPMAT Indore 2020

    The value of cos⁡2π8+cos⁡23π8+cos⁡25π8+cos⁡27π8\cos^2\frac{\pi}{8} + \cos^2\frac{3\pi}{8} + \cos^2\frac{5\pi}{8} + \cos^2\frac{7\pi}{8} is

    Correct answer22

    Why

    Fold four angles into two: 5π8\frac{5\pi}{8} and 7π8\frac{7\pi}{8} are π\pi minus 3π8\frac{3\pi}{8} and π\pi minus π8\frac{\pi}{8}, and squaring wipes out the minus sign.

    That leaves 2(cos⁡2π8+cos⁡23π8)2\left(\cos^2\frac{\pi}{8} + \cos^2\frac{3\pi}{8}\right), and 3π8\frac{3\pi}{8} is the complement of π8\frac{\pi}{8}, so its cosine is sin⁡π8\sin\frac{\pi}{8}.

    The bracket is sin⁡2+cos⁡2=1\sin^2 + \cos^2 = 1, so the value is 2.
