  1. 1Two kinds, one totaldearer count=total cost−n×cheap priceprice gap\text{dearer count} = \dfrac{\text{total cost} - n \times \text{cheap price}}{\text{price gap}}n=number of items of both kindsn = \text{number of items of both kinds}
  2. 2Transfer to equaliseA−x=B+x⇒A−B=2xA - x = B + x \Rightarrow A - B = 2xA gives x to B and they become equalA \text{ gives } x \text{ to } B \text{ and they become equal}
  3. 3What is leftIf named parts are fractions of the whole, the rest is 1 minus their sum, and the whole is the rest's count divided by that fraction.
  4. 4Fixed plus per unitbill=fixed+rate×units\text{bill} = \text{fixed} + \text{rate} \times \text{units}rate=bill2−bill1units2−units1\text{rate} = \dfrac{\text{bill}_2 - \text{bill}_1}{\text{units}_2 - \text{units}_1}
  5. 5EliminationScale one equation so an unknown has the same coefficient in both, then subtract. Remove the unknown the question does not ask for.
  6. 6Add them allWhen each equation covers a different group of the unknowns, add them all: each unknown appears equally often, so the grand total comes out first.
  7. 7Disguised linearax+by=c  →  au+bv=c\dfrac{a}{x} + \dfrac{b}{y} = c \;\to\; au + bv = cu=1x, v=1yu = \tfrac{1}{x},\ v = \tfrac{1}{y}
  8. 8Products that cancelWhen rr rows of ss seats become r+pr + p rows of s−qs - q seats, the total stays rsrs: expand (r+p)(s−q)=rs(r + p)(s - q) = rs, the rsrs cancels and a linear equation is left.
  9. 9Whole-number answersCounts must be whole: find one solution of ax+by=cax + by = c, then step xx up by bb and yy down by aa (after dividing out their HCF).
  10. 10One solutiona1a2≠b1b2\dfrac{a_1}{a_2} \ne \dfrac{b_1}{b_2}for a1x+b1y=c1 and a2x+b2y=c2\text{for } a_1x + b_1y = c_1 \text{ and } a_2x + b_2y = c_2
  11. 11None or infinitely manya1a2=b1b2≠c1c2: none\dfrac{a_1}{a_2} = \dfrac{b_1}{b_2} \ne \dfrac{c_1}{c_2}: \text{ none}all three equal: infinitely many (aix+biy=ci)\text{all three equal: infinitely many } (a_ix + b_iy = c_i)

  1. Q1Easy

    A college canteen sold 60 plates of poha and upma in a morning, collecting ₹1,920. Poha costs ₹30 a plate and upma costs ₹36 a plate. How many plates of upma were sold?

    Correct answer20

    Why

    Price every plate as poha first: 60×30=180060 \times 30 = 1800.

    The extra 1920−1800=1201920 - 1800 = 120 comes from upma at ₹6 more a plate, and 120÷6=20120 \div 6 = 20.

    So 20 plates of upma were sold.

  2. Q2Easy

    Riya and Sana have ₹1,800 between them. If Riya gives ₹150 to Sana, they will have equal amounts. How much does Riya have now?

    Correct answer₹1,050

    Why

    A transfer of ₹150 closes a gap of twice that, so Riya has ₹300 more than Sana.

    Together they have ₹1,800, so Riya has 1800+3002\frac{1800 + 300}{2}.

    That is ₹1,050.
