Formulas

At a glance 11 formulas

  1. 1Composition(f∘g)(x)=f(g(x))(f \circ g)(x) = f(g(x))g acts first; f(g(x))≠g(f(x)) in generalg \text{ acts first; } f(g(x)) \ne g(f(x)) \text{ in general}
  2. 2DomainAn even root needs what is under it ≥0\ge 0, a denominator must be ≠0\ne 0, and a log's input must be >0> 0. The domain is the overlap of all of them.
  3. 3RangeWrite y=f(x)y = f(x) and solve for xx: the range is every yy that gives a real xx from the domain.
  4. 4Inversey=f(x)  ⟺  x=f−1(y)y = f(x) \iff x = f^{-1}(y)f(f−1(x))=xf(f^{-1}(x)) = x
  5. 5Line over liney=ax+bcx+d: every y≠acy = \dfrac{ax + b}{cx + d}:\ \text{every } y \ne \dfrac{a}{c}d=−a⇒f(f(x))=xd = -a \Rightarrow f(f(x)) = x
  6. 6A line applied twicef(x)=ax+b⇒f(f(x))=a2x+(a+1)bf(x) = ax + b \Rightarrow f(f(x)) = a^2x + (a + 1)b
  7. 7Recover f from f(g(x))Put t=g(x)t = g(x), write xx in terms of tt, substitute, then rename tt as xx. Or test one value of xx against the options.
  8. 8f(x) with f(1/x)Write the equation again with xx replaced by 1x\frac{1}{x}, and solve the two like simultaneous equations.
  9. 9Functional equationsTry x=0x = 0, y=0y = 0 or y=1y = 1 first: it pins down f(0)f(0), or a step rule giving f(x+1)f(x + 1) from f(x)f(x).
  10. 10Max and minmax⁡(f,g)\max(f, g) follows the higher graph and min⁡(f,g)\min(f, g) the lower. The max of a rising and a falling line is least where they cross.
  11. 11Where graphs meetTwo graphs meet at the real roots of f(x)−g(x)=0f(x) - g(x) = 0; read the heights off the simpler function.

  1. Q1Easy

    If f(x)=2x+1f(x) = 2x + 1 and g(x)=x2g(x) = x^2, what is f(g(3))f(g(3))?

    Correct answer19

    Why

    Work from the inside out: gg acts first.

    g(3)=9g(3) = 9, then f(9)=2×9+1f(9) = 2 \times 9 + 1 (doing ff first gives g(7)g(7), the trap 49).

    So f(g(3))=19f(g(3)) = 19.

  2. Q2Easy

    Let f(x)=4x+73x−4f(x) = \frac{4x + 7}{3x - 4} for every real number x≠43x \neq \frac{4}{3}. What is the value of f(f(f(2)))f(f(f(2)))?

    Correct answer152\frac{15}{2}

    Why

    Check for a self-inverse first: when the top's xx-coefficient is minus the bottom's constant, f(f(x))=xf(f(x)) = x.

    Here the top has 4x4x and the bottom has −4-4, so applying ff three times lands where one ff does.

    f(2)=8+76−4f(2) = \frac{8 + 7}{6 - 4}, which is 152\frac{15}{2}.
